Wankelmut, a young german DJ that, like many others, decided to take on an adventure guided only by music. As always, music doesn't disapoint and the road was guiding him to remix the song "One Day" from Asaf Avidan & The Mojos, that brought him into the day light in front of the public eye. This song was already covered in a previous post. The novelty now is the release that happened just yesterday, the 2nd of November, of his debut compilation of remixes, presented by Poesie & Get Physical Musik. This label already represents artists like Booka Shade, Audio Fly and Nôze, but didn't want to let this one go and now embraces Wankelmut with his new release. The compilation? It's called Wanklemoods - Vol.1 and the name says it all. It gives us a personal interpretation of a solid selection of songs that enables some personal insight.
It starts with Acid Pauli remix of "El Zahir", an original from Raz Ohara, that introduces us to the spirit of the whole compilation and prepares us to the journey we're about to get on. However, the best is yet to come with some treats that oscilate between sober dancing or hipnotic environments, like the one in the DJ T. remix of "Lovework", an original of Black Light Smoke. There are some bumps in the road with some repetitive beats, letting us know that there is room for a certain improvement, but the spirit is never lost. And that is how, across beats with funny names, we can experience a mix between the shades of the dark beats and the freshness of some lighter sounds, ending it with the song that started it all: "One Day/ The Reckoning".

Como sempre, a música não falha e o caminho já estava traçado para que viesse a remixar a música "One Day" de Asaf Avidan & The Mojos, que o catapultou imediatamente para o conhecimento público. Uns quantos percalços pela estrada, com alguns beats repetitivos pelo meio do álbum, mas o espírito nunca se perde. E é assim que entre ritmos de nomes esquisitos, podemos experienciar um misto que oscila entre a penumbra dos dark beats e a frescura de sons mais abertos, terminando com a "One Day/ Reckoning Song", curiosamente a música com que tudo começou. Fica, portanto, a dica para quem quiser experimentar.

Uma dupla de irmãos do Reino Unido que se auto-denomina Disclosure e que traz esta "Carnival" da EP "Carnival/I Love...That You Know".
De repente lembram uma sonoridade semelhante à de James Blake, mas teria de conhecer o trabalho deles em maior extensão para poder afirmá-lo com mais certezas...which (by the way) is no problem at all! Venham mais destas.
Deftones com Minerva, do álbum "Deftones", lançado em 2003.
Já lá vão uns aninhos, mas esta foi uma das poucas músicas de Deftones que me cativou. Não os conheço bem, mas a esta conheço como a palma da minha mão.

Deste álbum do Sam the Kid gosto de praticamente todas. Foi o seu primeiro álbum só de beats, muito antes de Orelhas Negras e coisas que tais. Imagino que na altura sonhasse com voos mais altos, tal como a miúda que se deitava a ouvi-lo.
É um álbum que, na minha opinião, precisava de algum trabalho para atingir outra maturidade ou profundidade, mas por outro lado...são fases. E eternamente hoje é o único lugar que conhecemos.

Ando a ver uns episódios de "Breaking Bad" e no outro dia deparei-me com esta.
A música chama-se "DLZ" e pertence ao 3º álbum (Dear Science) dos TV On The Radio, uma banda americana formada em 2001 em Nova York.
Com uma pesquisa rápida fiquei a perceber que o nome do álbum se deve a uma nota que um dos elementos da banda escreveu, dizendo:
"Dear Science, start solving problems and curing diseases or shut the fuck up."

Baile Popular, mais um projecto liderado pelo imparável João Gil e João Monge, que se iniciou em 2010. Conta com as vozes alentejanas de Zé Emídio, Luís Espinho, Paulo Ribeiro e João Paulo, e ainda com a participação de Mário Delgado, Alexandre Frazão e Miguel Amado.
Poderá dizer-se que a essência deste projecto vem já dos tempos de "Rio Grande" e volta a concretizar-se aqui. Uma essência que deve existir desde os tempos em que o Homem foi feito: a de captar um povo, uma cultura e a sua voz.
Como João Gil diz em primeira pessoa:

Melody Gardot traz-nos um novo álbum "The Absence", lançado em Maio deste ano, com inspirações portuguesas dos meses em que viveu em Lisboa. Exemplos disso são músicas como "Lisboa" e "Amália" que, não tanto pelo estilo de música mas sim pelas letras, se tornam bonitas homenagens ao nosso país. Homenagens essas que Melody insistiu em fazer ontem no seu concerto em Cascais, tendo repetido inclusivamente parte da música "Lisboa", dizendo que era bom saber que as pessoas compreendiam o que ela estava a dizer.
Mostrou um álbum mais étnico, mais internacional, com uma forte pincelada brasileira e a par disso, uma personalidade bem mais divertida e energética do que esperava.
Tivémos direito a um encore e depois ainda convenceu o violoncelista a tocar mais uma só com ela, usando o violoncelo como se fosse uma viola, dedilhando com a mão esquerda e direita ao mesmo tempo. Fenomenal, não só pela originalidade, mas pelo surpreendente improviso que criou.
O concerto foi cativante, misterioso, muito diferente do que seria simplesmente pôr um álbum a tocar. As músicas foram bastante alteradas para permitir aqueles rasgos de genialidade que só podem surgir em improvisações (e que depois temos pena de não ter gravado) e proporcionaram-se momentos e atmosferas que só que lá estava sabe. Só assim é que vale a pena.

Apesar de talvez poder estar a ser influenciada pelo facto de conhecer esta banda há largos anos, posso afirmar de que se trata mesmo de uma grande banda! Para mim o "Steal This Album" é um dos melhores que eles lançaram, em conjunto com o "Toxicity" lançado no ano anterior, em 2001.

Reconheço que a nível de produção podia ser mais bem explorada e que, por exemplo, a "Night Air" do mesmo álbum é bastante superior a esse nível (até porque conta com a ajuda de Burial na produção). Mas hoje...não me interessam formalismos.

I leave you with "Spirits" from the "Mirrorwriting" album, released in 2011. I'll admit that this song could be better developed at a production level and that, for example, "Night Air" (a song from the same album) is far better at that level. But today...I don't care about formalities.
Frequentemente quando ouço uma música fico como que a analisar cada elemento e a pensar porque terá o compositor ou produtor decidido colocá-lo em determinado sitio. E continuo a minha saga divagante, absorta num ritmo ou melodia, imaginando se seria eu capaz de alguma vez me lembrar de fazer aquela sequência ("ena, isto é boa ideia") ou se não faria mais sentido estar outra coisa ali. Fico muitas vezes admirada e outras tantas decepcionada. Cada música é uma selva por explorar e se for boa e eu estiver nessa sintonia, sou capaz de ficar assim concentrada...ou a sonhar acordada.
Eu não crio música. Nada vindo de mim se formou, materializou e se tornou sentimento. As poucas tentativas que fiz foram com programas muito básicos, só para ir matando o bichinho. E secretamente ouço as criações de outros, imaginando se algum dia seria possível eu fazer o mesmo. Pegar num vazio e criar. Chegar às minhas próprias sequências e combinações e timings e ter as minhas próprias coisas estranhas que afinal no todo até resultam (gosto tanto quando isso acontece).
Eu vou tentando extrair regras ou perceber padrões que resultam, e penso que grande parte do criar tem que ver com sensibilidade. Mas há muita coisa que tenho de aprender...e o preço deste tipo de cursos e material infelizmente não é nada acessível.

Born in Australia, he decided to dedicate himself to be a street performer, tracking down the globe with his electronic gear and voice.
A performance by Dub FX consists on an alliance between voice and a Live Looping technique. This means that through beatbox he creates every component of a song, recording it as he goes. This way, he repeats a layer in a loop while recording the next layer and so forth.
In the meantime he is married to a woman that named herself "Flower Fairy" who joins him in every journey.
